Introduction
Welcome to Stenography Dictionary. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect information when you use our Android application and related services available through stenotest.com.
Key takeaway: Core dictionary search is available without login. If you choose to register, log in, or use Request Word, the App sends the information needed to provide those features to our server over HTTPS.
Information We Collect
Depending on how you use the App, we may collect:
- Account information such as username, email address, mobile number, gender, state, and password when you register or log in. For mobile number entry, the App may use Google’s Phone Number Hint API to allow you to select your phone number from your device in a secure system-provided interface. We do not access or read your phone number without your explicit selection.
- Request Word submissions such as the words, phrases, and related text you send through that feature
- Authentication data such as mobile access tokens and basic account profile details needed to keep you signed in
- Push notification identifiers such as Firebase Cloud Messaging token, install ID, and notification status needed to deliver app notifications to logged-in or anonymous app installs
- Advertising data such as device identifiers and advertising IDs (e.g., Google AD_ID) to serve relevant advertisements in the App
- Technical request data such as IP address, request metadata, and user agent information required to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the service
Data Stored Locally on Your Device
The App stores some data locally on your device for performance and convenience, including:
- Favorite Words for quick access
- Search History for recently viewed entries
- Word of the Day cache for current-day display
- Dictionary sync cache containing downloaded words, phrases, and image URLs so content can refresh without a Play Store update
- Login state including your mobile auth token and basic profile details if you choose to sign in
- Notification settings including install ID and the last known push token used to register this app install for notifications
You can clear locally stored app data through your device settings. Some server-side account and request data may still remain in your StenoTest account unless you ask us to delete it where applicable.
Internet Permission and Network Usage
The App uses internet access for the following purposes:
- Dictionary sync to download updated words, phrases, and image URLs from our server
- Image loading to display word and phrase images hosted through our current or future storage setup
- Account features including registration, login, logout, and session checks
- Request Word to submit requests and view request history or status
- Push notifications to register the device for app announcements and send optional notifications through Firebase Cloud Messaging
- Advertisements to download and display banner and interstitial ads through Google AdMob
- App updates through Google Play in-app update services
Supported app-server communication is intended to use HTTPS encryption. Our server may process standard technical logs such as IP address, request path, and user agent for delivery, security, abuse prevention, and troubleshooting.
How We Use Information
We use collected information to:
- Create and manage optional user accounts
- Authenticate users and keep account-based features working in the App
- Process Request Word submissions and show request history or approval status
- Deliver updated dictionary content and image URLs
- Send optional app notifications and announcements
- Secure the service, prevent abuse, and investigate technical issues
Text-to-Speech
The App uses your device's built-in Text-to-Speech engine to pronounce words. This feature operates on your device and is not designed by us to upload your spoken content to our servers.
Third-Party Services
The App uses the following services or components:
- Google Play In-App Updates to deliver app updates. See Google's Privacy Policy
- Google AdMob to serve advertisements within the App. This service may collect and use your IP address, device identifiers, and crash logs. See Google's Privacy Policy
- Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver app notifications. See Firebase Privacy and Security
- Coil as an image loading and caching library inside the App
- StenoTest backend infrastructure to serve dictionary content, images, authentication, and Request Word functionality
What We Do Not Access by Default
The App does not request or access the following device data by default:
- Contacts
- Location
- SMS
- Call logs
- Photos, camera, or microphone recording for upload features
- SMS content, except for automated OTP retrieval used solely for account verification (if applicable). The App does not access or store personal messages.
Phone Number Handling
When you choose to register or log in using your mobile number, the App may provide a system interface powered by Google Play Services that allows you to select your phone number from your device.
This process is fully user-controlled. The App does not automatically access, read, or collect your phone number without your explicit selection.
Your phone number is used only for account creation, login, and authentication purposes. We do not access your contacts or retrieve your phone number silently.
Children's Privacy
Stenography Dictionary is intended for a general audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children in violation of applicable law. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through the App, please contact us so we can review and address the issue where appropriate.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to help protect user data, including:
- HTTPS-based encrypted network communication for supported app-server traffic
- Local storage through Android's standard app sandbox mechanisms
- Bearer-token based authentication for mobile account features
- Android network security settings that block cleartext HTTP traffic in the app
Data Retention
Local app data remains on your device until it is replaced, cleared by you, or removed when the App is uninstalled. Account and Request Word data stored on our server may be retained for as long as reasonably necessary to operate the service, maintain records, resolve disputes, and comply with legal obligations.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with a revised "Last updated" date.
